William Maxwell Little

Born 24 Jul 1788. Writer of Lockerbie. Became a lawyer in Edinburgh. Married Anne Martin ca 1818, the second child of William Martin, writer of Blackford and Sophia Aitchison He died 1843 and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, Edinburgh. It was through Anne's brothers Dr Alexander Martin, Dr Mungo Johnson Martin and Francis Martin, that four of William Maxwell Little's children became involved with the early development of Singapore: Dr Robert Little, Anne Little, John Martin Little, and Matthew Little.
Note that in traditional Scottish legal terminology, a writer was a legal practitioner, such as a notary or solicitor. And a writer to the Signet was a member of an ancient society of solicitors, having the exclusive privilege of preparing crown writs.
