Burke's Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland

The following tabulation is especially helpful as regards the availability of volumes digitised by Google Books or (in particular) by archive.org – please consult the Wiki article for details of the appropriate hyperlinks. And in my considered opinion, the archive.org presentations are far easier to use and much nicer to look at than the Google Books ones.

The following summary is likewise very helpful for grasping the complexities of Burkes' publications, especially as regards the emergence of the separate Irish editions.

The three volume 18th edition, edited by Peter Townend, was published as follows:

- first volume in 1965, with a reprint in 1969
- second volume in 1969
- third volume in 1972

The previous editions of LG were in:

1952 17th edition, edited by L G Pine, with a supplement published in 1954

1939 16th edition, edited by Pine and others, and including American Families with British Ancestry

1937 15th edition, edited by H Pirie-Gordon, the so-called 'Centenary' edition, which included an Irish supplement

1925 14th edition, a re-issue of the 1921 edition, with a supplement

1921 13th edition, by Sir Bernard Burke, edited by A Winston Thorpe

1914 12th edition, edited by A C Fox-Davies of 'Armorial Families' fame

1906 11th edition, by Sir Bernard and Ashworth P Burke

1900 10th edition, with an Addenda., by Sir Bernard and Ashworth P Burke

1898 9th edition, 'by Sir Bernard Burke, and edited by his son Ashworth P Burke', with a separate section on Ireland. The latter was republished in 1899 with a Supplement as the Landed Gentry of Ireland (LGI) There were other LGIs in 1904, 1912, 1958 and 1976 (the latter actually called 'Irish Family Records')

1894 8th edition, by Sir Bernard Burke, edited by his son Ashworth P Burke

1886 7th edition, by Sir Bernard Burke

1882 '6th' edition, a reissue of the earlier 6th edition, with a larger Supplement and Addenda, by Sir Bernard Burke

1879 6th edition, with Supplement and Corrigenda, by Sir Bernard Burke

1875 5th edition re-issued with two Supplements and an Addenda, with a Supplement, by Sir Bernard Burke

1871 5th edition, with Supplement, by Sir Bernard Burke

1868 4th edition revised and enlarged, with Supplement and Corrigenda, by Sir Bernard Burke 1862-3 4th edition (either as one volume dated 1863, or as two volumes dated 1862 and 1863), by Sir Bernard Burke

1855-58 3rd edition, with a Supplement (either as one volume dated 1858, or in parts dated 1855-58), by Sir Bernard Burke

1850-53 (2nd edition re-issued) with Supplement, Addenda (with additional pages), Corrigenda and Index. Issued in parts, usually bound in 3 volumes, dates vary, and can even be given as 1847-1853 edited by John and John Bernard Burke, though usually issued as by Sir Bernard Burke.

1843-49 (2nd edition) with Supplement, Addenda, Corrigenda and Index. Issued in parts, usually bound in 3 volumes, by John and John Bernard Burke

1833-35 in three volumes with the original title 'A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, . . .' by John Burke. The three volumes were re-issued in 1836-7. A fourth volume was issued in 1837.

The above information comes from 'Burke's Family Index' (1976) in which Rosemary Pinches gives a bibliography of all the 'Burke' publications. In fact the publishing was so complex that the 'Family Index' bibliography is not necessarily always correct. For example, my copy of the 'Commoners' has dates 1834, 1835, 1836 and 1838 respectively for the four volumes.
