The Long Connection

Although the internet1,  2 (including, as always, www.thepeerage.com) provides a certain amount of information, the most authoritative account of this family history would surely be Robert Mowbray Howard's Records and Letters of the Longs of Longville, Jamaica and Hampton Lodge, Surrey; (2 volumes); Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co, London, 1925.

Our family copy, now happily rediscovered (May 2016), though the first volume has been quite badly damaged by a dog with an impressive set of teeth, does indeed provide vivid pictorial details of this colourful line of descent from Captain Samuel Long, the sturdy adventurer who participated in the capture of Jamaica in 1655 and was a dominant player in the governance and economic life of the island thereafter.

But the internet links provided for various individuals in the lineage that subsequently intermarried with the Glossop Howards should provide some useful background information. Robert Mowbray Howard himself was grandfather of Audrey Howard, my mother-in-law. Full details of the Glossop Howard family are of course provided in the Howard Connection itself and, therefore, aren't included in the tables below.

If you're more interested in the geography, history and economy of Jamaica since earliest times, then where better to start than Edward Long's three-volume magnum opus of 1774:

T H E   H I S T O R Y   O F   J A M A I C A
or, General survey of the antient and modern state of that island:
with Reflections on its Situation, Settlements, Inhabitants,
Climate, Products, Commerce, Laws, and Government

IN THREE VOLUMES.

ILLUSTRATED WITH COPPER PLATES.

PRINTED FOR T. LOWNDES, IN FLEET-STREET, MDCCLXXIV

Though you would need prodigious stamina – the first volume alone, comprising nineteen chapters, subdivided into two books, runs to a staggering 628 pages in total, the second volume scarcely less at 601 pages and the third, final, volume still a commendable size at 380 pages. (Click here and here for page-turning facsimiles of the second and third volumes; none seems to exist of the first volume.)

But perhaps a simple map might suffice:

in which Long Bay features on the southern coast and (as far as I can ascertain) Samuel Long's estate of Longville lay not very far to the north-east of that same bay.

The Walpole / Hoste / Long / Howard linkage

An entertaining aspect of this Connection is that my stepmother Jane Waddell (née Hoste) and my mother-in-law Audrey Kaulback (née Howard) hereby had an ancestral nexus back in the 18th century (via the very fine-looking Horatio Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford), as becomes apparent in the following table.

Note the numerous deceptive similarities between a bewildering variety of Walpole creations and lineages in www.thepeerage.com, my principal source – hopefully I have avoided the more obvious pitfalls.
