Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue was born on 12 March 1753.2 He was the son of Matthew Fortescue, 2nd Baron Fortescue of Castle Hill and Anne Campbell.3 He married Hester Grenville, daughter of Rt. Hon. George Grenville and Elizabeth Wyndham, on 10 May 1782.2 He died on 16 June 1841 at age 88.
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 At University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, (an unknown value).2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Beaumaris between 1784 and 1785.2 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Fortescue of Castle Hill, co. Devon [G.B., 1746] on 10 July 1785.1 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Devon between 1788 and 1839.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Devon between 1788 and 1839.2 He was created 1st Viscount Ebrington, co. Gloucester [GREAT BRITAIN] on 1 September 1789.2 He was created 1st Earl Fortescue [GREAT BRITAIN] on 1 September 1789.2 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.).2 He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.).2
