Hawkins' knowledge of the criminal law was detailed and extensive. He presided at a large number of the most famous English criminal trials of his day, and acquired a reputation as a hanging judge.
Lord Brampton was twice married, both marriages being childless. He was for many years counsel to the Jockey Club, frequented the leading race meetings, and was considered a capable judge of horses. In 1898 he converted to Catholicism.
