Captain Adelbert Charles Edward Salvin Bowlby, Ceylon Planter's Rifle Corps, entered the Egypt theatre of war on 17 November 1914. He was recalled to serve with the Leinster Regiment effective 1 February 1915. Bowlby was O.C. of 'B' Company, 7th Battalion, Leinster Regiment, when it embarked for France on 17 December 1915. Captain Bowlby started flight training in late 1916 and qualified as a Pilot on 8 February 1917. He served in No. 5 Reserve Squadron, No. 28 Reserve Squadron, No. 66 Training Squadron and No. 198 Depot Squadron, between December 1916-November 1917. Bowlby was appointed a Flying Officer (Temporary Major) on 15 July 1917. On 17 November he was posted as Assistant Commandant of No. 1 School of Aeronautics. He served out the war in Britain and was released from service on 12 October 1919. For his services with the R.A.F. he was mentioned in despatches in Air Ministry List of 29 August 1919.
