Hi

I am looking for any info on the Lamberty family. My great grandfather emmigrated to Edinburgh around the 1900s with his family. He was a medical officer. His name was Winston Maurice Lamberty, brothers were Henry, Radley. I think there may have been a lane in Port louis called Lamberty Lane but not sure of the significance.

Any info or ideas?

Hi

My father attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh where he knew a boy called Winston Lamberty who went on to become a dentist. He had a dental surgery in Polwarth Gardens, Edinburgh from about the early '50s, and was our family dentist for several years. I don't know if this is any help?

Hi

Thanks. That was my grandfather. Sadly I never got to meet him... was he a good dentist?

Hi Elizabeth

I'm sure he was, but we changed to one nearer our home when I was about 7. I do still remember him though - dentistry wasn't as "pain-free" then (early 60s)as it is nowadays! My mother - who is now almost 87 - was talking about him only recently.

What part of the world are you in?

I am in Stirling. I was adopted at birth and only in the last 5 years found my birth father who was Winston Lamberty's son, hence the interest in the family history.... and Mauritius. I have only got back as far as Winston's father.

Anyway, thanks for your reply.

Hi Elizabeth

I wish you luck with your search; if you like I will ask my Mum for anything she remembers about him? Sometimes little bits of info can add up to a bigger picture and might help you to have an idea of what he was like. If you want to send me your email address to Liza_macdonald@hotmail.com we can carry on this conversation if you like.

I was very interested in your post when I read it. I am one of Winston Lamberty's sibling's grand children. Winston's father was called Henry Gilbert Lamberty and was a doctor in Mauritius. The road they stayed in was named after the family, Lamberty Road, in a small place outside of Port Louis (I visted Mauritius to trace the family history myself and it is a beautiful place). Winston was a dentist and had his own pratice at Polwarth Gardens until he retired. He was one of 9 children, all who are now deceased. If you want to ask me any specific information I will do my best to answer it for you (or we can do this via email if you want to rpivide this).

Thanks that is interesting. I know that Henry Gilbert Lamberty married Louisa Torrie Murphy in Edinburgh in 1908 and that he died in 1962. On his marriage certificate it says his father was William Lamberty and mother Helena Gaspard. Do you kow anything about them or what they did in Mauritius? I can't seem to get any further back than this and I would love to know what their story was.

Dear Meriline

Thank you so much for that detailed information on the Lambertys. It was great to hear from you.

I notice that many of the names have ‘jean marie’ in front of them. Is that a tradition?

What was life like growing up in Mauritius? What made you emigrate, it looks like paradise.

Sorry for all the questions. My great grandfather was Henry Gilbert Lamberty (Raoul and Winston’s father) and I know that he married in Edinburgh to Louisa Torrie Murphy. On his marriage certificate it stated that his father was William Lamberty and mother Helena Gaspard. Do you know anything at all about them? I have hit this brick wall and I would love to know their story.

My own story only began fairly recently as I was adopted at birth and found out that my birth father was Derek Lamberty about 8 years ago. I have been researching ever since. Derek lives in Linlithgow and has 2 children, Carly and Russell. Derek’s father was Winston Lamberty. Derek’s memory of everything is a bit vague. As far as I was told, his grandfather lived in Mauritius, owned a mountain and had 100 slaves. This is pretty much all the information he gave me.

I am 46 years old now, married to Iain and have 4 children, Christopher who is studying Politics at Edinburgh Uni, Jemma who is studying dentistry at Dundee Uni, Laura and James are still at school. I work from home as a web designer. It is a business I set up about 12 years ago now so that I could have flexible working hours to fit in with the children growing up. I have never been to Mauritius but my husband has promised me a trip there for our silver wedding (next year) so I am looking forward very much to that. When we travel it is usually to USA where I have family from my adopted mother.

Thank you once again for getting in touch. I will add you on facebook shortly.

Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth

I was interested in your correspondance with Meriline. Uncle Winston was ever the joker and often embelished things! Talking to my dad, Winston's nephew and Winston's sister's son, he said they never had a mountain and slaves -probably just Uncle Winston being funny as ever!

A story you may find of interest is that Uncle Winston used to be Sean Connery's dentist when he was a milk man and at times (allegedly) Sean couldn't afford the bills so Uncle Winston used to go easy on this. When he became famous and hit the big time, as a way of thanking him for this, he used to send Derek and Brian a Christmas present!

Uncle Winston (Ryland et al) used to have a lovely big house in Mauritius and had a monkey as a pet. Unfortunately it got shot stealing fruit from the neighbour's tree - my grandmother(Winston's sister) was very upset by this. They also had German Sheperd's as pets.

Uncle Winston spent many years tracing the family tree way back so I don't know who got this when he died - it may be worth asking Derek as this would give you a lot of the information you need. I guess you know the names of all Winston's brothers and sisters as he was one of 9. I still have difficulty remembering them all even though I knew them all from family gatherings - just was very young at the time when I met most of them.

Uncle Winston, Uncle Hedley, Uncle Norman, Aunt May, Aunt Gladys and my Grandmother(Olive)were the ones I knew best. Uncle Winston used to go to my Gran's (Lulu as I called her as Uncle Winston gave her this name when I was wee and it stuck!) every Wednesday evening for tea and always wore different bow ties to amuse us! He also used to pretend to give me and my sister a karate chop when we used to go to him for our dental check ups - he was quite a character and had a great sense of humour. He was a very dashing, handsome man who dressed immaculately!

I hope this gives you a little more information.

Do you know anything about Ryland Charles Lamberty?

He was born on 22 May 1908 in Edinburgh, son of Henry Gilbert Lamberty, medical student, and Louie Torrie Murphy, and he too became a doctor.

In 1940 he married Philomene F D Cook, and they had two children: Irene L L, born 1941 and David Charles, born 1942, both in Edinburgh. They must have divorced because Philomene died in Edinburgh in 2011. David married Rosemary Twydell in Edinburgh in 1969.

In 1950 he married a relative of mine, Helen Erskine Ferguson, in London. They had a son named John Martin Lamberty, born in London in 1951. Helen died in 1966, and Ryland married Betty E Lambert in 1975.

Ryland died on 5 February 1996 in London.

John married Jane Francis Thomson in York in 1978, but they too must have divorced because Jane F Lamberty married Jeffrey Chegwin in York in 1984.

Hello to all of you,

Being french, I hope you will excuse my poor english.

I just happened to make a quick search about Winston Lamberty's family, as I found an old photograph of him, together with his wife Sally and my own mother and wondered what happened to his family.

This is just a humble contribution to Bram67's informations about Winston who was a very good friend of my parents'.

He and his family used to come almost every year to Cavalaire in the south of France in the sixties and they invariably spent quite some time together during these yearly holidays. I was very young at the time but I shall never forget Winston's permanent smile and humour, as well as his perfect french.

Also we were all looking forward to seing the brand new Jaguar he was going to come with (every year a new one from what I remember) and go for a drive with him.

I also remember Dereck and Brian who were rather patient with the little devil I must have been at the time.

I have no idea how they and my parents came to meet in the first place. WW2 Resistance maybe?

My brothers and sister may have more information about it, as they are quite older than me. I shall ask.

I enclose the photo for you to enrich your archives.

Best regards,

Claude Rivière
