Two variants
The first variant, ghostly, drained of all colour, with the figures now becoming enigmatic, even sinister, is straight from M R James
while the second, like a molten mirror, has a burning intensity, a sense of impending fiery cataclysm from which the figures are now frantically trying to escape – and the final moments of Manderley come irresistibly to mind, as they did metaphorically to Ardnagashel itself.
